The curriculum includes an academic element, a life skills component, vocational exposure & training and eventually work experience placements.
Academic subjects – Mathematical Literacy and Communication in English following the accredited AET curriculum.
Functional subjects – Life Skills, World Knowledge, Computer Skills, Home Management
Vocational subjects – Hospitality, Enterprise, Gardening, Woodcraft and Administration Skills
Exposure to different vocational subjects during the initial years allows the Academy to assess each student’s strengths and interests, and based on this students are exposed to the world of work from year 2/3 for a limited time period with a job coach/mentor. These work experience placements are sourced, managed and supported by the Academy and are unique to each student. `
To further prepare the students for the workplace, the Academy is run on work and office protocols. Board meetings replace the traditional School Assembly and the learners are subject to termly Performance Appraisal meetings, with self-appraisal and goal setting being an important aspect of this process.
The Academy provides a high level of individual instruction and builds on each learner’s unique strengths rather than focusing on areas of limitation. Subjects are taught practically using integrative and dynamic methods, and individual education programmes (IEPs) are developed and tailored to meet the needs of the individual learner.
The Academy has 6 classes each catering for a different age group and level of functionality. A class can be completed over 2 years if students will benefit from additional time to consolidate skills, and there is no pressure on students to achieve a certain level within a limited timeframe. Exams are only written for the AET Mathematics and English if students demonstrate that they are ready.
